I rang the call box and waited for the buzz before stepping into the softly lit lobby. Across from the wall of mailboxes, the elevator delivered me swiftly to his floor, leaving barely enough time to check my face and outfit in the mirror. As I approached, he opened the door to his apartment, wielding a spatula and dressed only in a pair of pants and an apron.
For a brief moment, I was stunned. “When you said you were cooking for me, I wasn’t expecting a show to come with the meal.”
He extended his hand and pulled me over the threshold to greet me with a kiss. “I aim to please,” he said as our lips parted.
“Mmm.” I licked the taste of him from my lips. “Delicious.” A pleasant scent wafted over from the kitchen. “What do we have on the menu?”
He guided me through his impressive setup – stew on the stove, bread in the oven, a side salad, a bottle of my favorite wine, and a tray of finger foods to get started.
He handed me a glass of wine. “Welcome to my home.”
“Thank you for having me,” I said. We toasted and sipped.

I laughed. “Did you get that line from a romance novel?”
He blinked with a befuddled smile. “What do you mean?”
“It’s practically the biggest trope in the genre. You know, when there’s a great view but the main character is more beautiful to their lover.”
He shrugged, unfazed. “What can I say? I’m a poet.”
I laughed again, stepping outside to the banister. He followed closely behind, circled his arms around my waist, and rested his chin on my shoulder.
“What if I told you that the sound of your laugh is even better than this view?” he muttered, low at my ear. “Is that a common trope?”
I hummed as I thought about this. He nuzzled into the curve of my shoulder as we swayed gently together. “I haven’t heard of that one yet.”
His breath brushed my cheek. “Excellent. My thespian career remains viable.”
I took another sip of my drink and set it down on the patio table, then leaned back into him and clasped my hands over his at my belly. His body was warm along my back, his arms wrapping me with soft heat. The balcony was set inward, so the walls on either side mostly sheltered us from view. A courtyard separated us from the buildings across the way…
