He sidled up to me in the line to enter the botanical garden with a cup of hot chocolate in each hand. I accepted a cup and cradled its warmth in my palms, feeling the same heat spreading through me as I took a sip of the sweet, rich drink.

The park grounds darkened as the autumn sun lowered behind the tall trees. He extended his arm around my shoulder and I leaned into him, burrowing into his coat and tucking myself into the crook of his warm body. Our breaths turned cloudy in the cool night air, crisp with the scent of fallen leaves and campfire cinders.

The property had been dressed with colorful string lights and gourds to celebrate the season. Some garden areas had sound and light shows accompanied by artificial mist, though the ground had released its own dewy glow as the evening temperature dropped.

We entered an area of the garden displaying hundreds of glowing pumpkins at the base of trees, between shrubs, and along the hedges. As the crowd scattered towards the other gardens, we intertwined our fingers and broke off from the flow, strolling instead along the unpaved footpath at the edge of the lawn, ambient music wafting from behind us.

We approached a bench near the far corner of the lawn, exchanging glances and smiles along the way but no words, communicating instead through the touch and stroking of our hands. We turned to sit, watching the crowd emerging from the botanical gardens and continuing along the path strung over with delicate, sparkling string lights.

I sipped my hot cocoa, which had lowered to a less scalding temperature. “I wasn’t expecting the woods out here to be so thick.”

“Right?” he said. “It’s not far from the city but it feels like another world, especially at night. This is my favorite time of year to come out here.”

I looked over my shoulder to the shaded treeline. “How far do you think it goes?”

He gave me a sly look as I turned to face him. “Want to find out?”…

This is the end of the preview.
